A Molotov Cocktail, at the point it broke and ignited. The white dots in the air around the fireball are drops of unignited petrol.

Good exposure, brilliant focus that picks out all the detail for you. And a great idea. The in-focus section of pavement detracts, as it looks very edited, but frankly who's looking at the pavement. Faved.

I see what you mean, it looks overly (ie, very unaturally sharp) just to the left of the explosion. I've replaced the image with one I resized from the RAW file rather than the .jpg, and it looks a lot more natural now. I'd focused so much (mentally) on the 'splode that I'd totally missed the ground around it altogether.

probably the greatest shot I've seen in a long long while, instant favorite. Although I loved it even more in full view. It's just so freaking...wow.

You are the first person I know of who has had experiences with that infamous home-made incendiary bomb. How loud was it when it ignited? What did it sound like besides glass shattering?

not especially loud, really. It gave off more of a "whoomph" type, ignition of fuel sound than a shatter- or, rather, you heard a smash of glass that was quickly interrupted by the ignition of petrol. stand a few hundred meters away and you wouldnt hear it at all. It burned something vicious however, especially on the tarmac. You can see why it has the reputation it has.
